Creating character in a home isn't about having the biggest house, the newest finishes, or the most expensive furnishings. In fact, one of the most common requests I receive from clients in new-build homes is how to add character to their space and make it feel less generic. Character comes from the layers we thoughtfully add over time: meaningful pieces, collected treasures, unique artwork, vintage finds, and design choices that reflect your story. Whether you live in a charming older home, a brand-new build, or somewhere in between, timeless interior design is about creating a space that feels unmistakably yours.

The difference between decorating and designing

Before we talk about creating a home with character, it’s important to understand the difference between decorating and designing. Neither is more important than the other. In fact, the most successful homes rely on both.

Decorating focuses on the layers that bring personality, warmth, and visual interest into an existing space. It includes selecting furniture, arranging the room in a way that feels inviting, layering fabrics and textures, choosing paint colors or wallpaper, styling shelves and mantels, and creating thoughtful moments throughout a room that reflect who you are.

Design, however, begins with the foundation of the home and how it needs to function for your everyday life. It considers the way you move through a space, your routines, and the elements that are more permanent, such as flooring, cabinetry, countertops, lighting, and architectural details. Interior design creates the framework around which everything else is built. It brings together structure, functionality, and beauty so your home not only looks beautiful but supports the way you actually live.

The best spaces combine both intentional design decisions that make a home function beautifully, paired with personal layers that make it feel like yours.

It may be a vintage piece paired with a modern sofa, artwork collected from meaningful places, books that reflect your interests, or textiles that add softness and texture.

These layers create contrast and visual interest and keep a room from feeling overly designed or predictable and allow your personality to naturally become part of the space.

Whether that's the antique chest with it's family story, the chair that invites you to curl up, the artwork that sparks a memory, or the small objects that make a room feel uniquely yours. The most memorable homes are not filled with things simply because they are beautiful. They are filled with pieces that have meaning, purpose, and a place within the overall story of the home.

Stop Decorating for the internet and start decorating for your life

If there’s one thing I could shout from the mountaintops about what I do for a living, it would be this: celebrate your individuality!

Your home was never meant to look like a showroom, a Pinterest board, or someone else’s living room. Inspiration is wonderful, but your home should be a reflection of your own experiences, interests, and personality. You must look beyond the walls of your home for inspiration. Visit museums, wander through gardens, explore beautiful architecture, read books, create art, or simply pay attention to the things that make you feel inspired.

Your brain needs creative input to produce creative output. It’s why I protect Fridays as a creative day for myself. Time spent exploring, learning, and enjoying the things that inspire me allows me to bring fresh ideas and creativity into my work with clients.

Think about the things that make you uniquely you, such as your favorite flower, a meaningful place, a color combination you’re drawn to, your hobbies, your family history, or even the little things that make you smile.

For me, my family history influences so much of what I love about design. My roots in Kentucky, New York, England, Scotland, and Italy show up in my appreciation for English cottage style, antique pieces, cozy kitchens with plenty of textures, and rooms designed for conversation, entertaining and hosting.

The pieces in our home reflect who my husband and I are, the stories we carry, and the things we love.

We even embrace a little whimsy, like our cheeky needlepoint pillow that says “Please Leave By 9” because we love an early bedtime, or the collection of tiny squirrels that started as a playful gift from my husband and became part of our fall decorating traditions.

That is the beauty of personalized home design. The most meaningful spaces aren't created by following a formula. They come from understanding the principles of design, adding a generous dose of your personality, and embracing the details that make your home unmistakably yours.

The Details That Make a House Feel Like a Home

When people ask me how to make a house feel like a home, the answer is rarely found in one large purchase or a single design decision. It’s found in the thoughtful details that you collect along the way.

When your home starts to reflect those who live there, you’re well on your way to a character-filled home.

It may be a collection of family photographs displayed in a meaningful way, artwork that reminds you of a favorite place or travels, a vintage family piece with a story behind it, or a fabric that brings warmth and softness into a room (or a quilt made by a family member).  

Instead of asking, “What does my home need to look like?” consider asking, “What do I want my home to feel like?” The answer will continually guide you toward choices that are not only beautiful, but meaningful.

Patience is a virtue (that leads to a more memorable home)

Creating a home with character, beauty, and meaning doesn’t happen by following a formula or recreating someone else’s space. It comes from thoughtful decisions, personal details, and a willingness to embrace the things that make your home uniquely yours.
